I’m off to the mall to sell razor blades so people can scrape off their “Question Authority” bumper stickers. Just remember: Dissent is still the highest form of patriotism. Except now it will be practiced by the lowest form of people.

Law & Order Shout Out to Obama
Tonight at the end of the season premiere of Law & Order, as McCoy is walking away from the lecturn after a press conference, a reporter can be heard shouting, “Mr. McCoy, is it true you’ve been asked to join the Obama Administration?”
To be honest, I actually have been watching all day for hints of the election results in prime-time shows. With the extremely quick turn-around digital editing has provided, networks can now easily make shows seem quite timely. I suppose they recorded the woman saying both “Obama Administration” and “McCain Administration,” much like Seinfeld did with the Dinkins v. Giuliani mayoral race in The Non-Fat Yogurt.
UPDATE: Whoa… South Park didn’t just settle for a pre-recorded “either outcome” shout out. The Nov. 5th Episode is filled with Obama’s speech and McCain’s concession speech. These boys must have stayed up all night to get this one through. Here.
Historic Republican Control of Tennessee's General Assembly
Despite the rest of the country’s lurch to the Left in this year’s election, the Tennessee General Assembly has moved decidedly to the Right, rewarding Republicans with the majority in both houses since the years immediately following the Civil War. More here.
Congratulations to President-elect Obama
May he always be in the right;
but our president, right or wrong.
Americans, this is a fantastic milestone we’ve reached. It can no longer be questioned whether or not a black man can be elected President. Obama was right in saying that we now know anything is possible. While I truly believe that it has always been true, I pray that a real understanding of this truth has sunk into the lives of those people whose faces we saw were wet with tears tonight. It’s a great day that America has proven it’s ability to overcome the base aversion to one man’s race, and hopefully soon we will reach the point where it is fully acceptable to live out Dr. King’s dream, that we judge a man by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin.
My hope for America is that we do not see the Right succumb to the temptation to engage in baseless ad hominem attacks designed to delegitimize the President-elect. We saw this happen eight years ago when the Democrat’s presidential nominee did not prevail on election day, and the Left never allowed George W. Bush to be seen as the legitimate, worthy president that he was. The result has been eight years of derision and unnecessary vitriol, and our Republic is the worse for it.
Friends, you will be met with the temptation to refuse giving your respect to Obama. Do not let this happen. We will fight him on the issues, we will push back against those policies which are detrimental to America. But he will be the President, and rightfully so — regardless of the size of his mandate. Our beautiful republic is not finished, we are not on the precipice of the end. Criticize President Obama for his actions, policies, and promises when it is necessary? Absolutely, but keep your heads about you. Hyperbole has been the tool of the rabid Left, and you’ve thought them unworthy to offer an opinion. Do not yourself be known for the same.
If you’re frustrated, I understand. If your heart sunk tonight, I am with you. But the proper behavior in response is not what we’ve seen from the Left for the last eight years, so do not emulate it. It may win elections, but it is not what it best for America. After all, is that not what the true patriot wants?
So instead, take this time to prepare. You and I both know that we’re going to need some intelligent approaches to handle the problems that are coming. Tomorrow, go to your local library and get a book on American History. Study even more World History. What good is it, after all, to have learned the tragedies of a despot and remain ignorant concerning the mechanisms of his rise? Read up on our civics process, so that you know how it works, in detail. I confess that even I am far too ignorant on the matter than is acceptable for any American citizen.
The remedy is in understanding America as it is rather than as it is assumed to be. Contrary to what we saw this election season from so many fervent supporters of either presidential candidate, our solution is not in one man. Neither do the failures of government come from one man, or even a single branch for that matter. Proper government in America lies in power at the local level. Know this and exercise it. Know your local leaders and watch them. Keep them accountable. Petition them. Know that government is rarely the answer to your problems, but when it is, you will find your solutions locally. Do not thank or decry George W. Bush for your economic situation, and do not apply the same standard to Barack Obama.
By the end of January 2009, Barack Obama will be my President. I will support and praise him for his good ideas, and fiercely oppose him for that which is detrimental. I have not set the entirety of my efforts against him, and neither should you.
As Conservatives, we’ve long said that we are responsible for our own person. The rubber has hit the road, friends. That responsibility, that high calling applies as well to our role in government. It is incumbent upon us “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Do not let us down.
Election 2008: Semi-live Blog
6:09: My prediction: Tomorrow, the MSM will stop hating McCain. He’ll become a favorite again, and analysis of his campaign will even be sympathetic.
6:19: 41 minutes until the campaign ads stop. Finally.
6:21: Looks like so far, McCain has the lead in both electoral college and popular vote (8 to 3, 53% to 46% respectively). I guess the polls close early in the racist states.
6:28: Ace: Biggest loss of the night? Megyn Kelly is not wearing the glasses. I thought she was saving them for the rally night.
6:30: Teh Burl is drunkblogging. More…
Unbelievable
WOW. Is this the hope, change, and unity that we were promised? Since when have the Black Panthers provided polling center “security”?
Still Undecided?
How on earth is anyone still undecided? And it’s not a low number either! The IBD/TIPP poll has it at 9.5% as of the time of writing. They’ll release another poll here in about a half hour, and I’ll update this post then. It will be interesting to see if that number’s dropped at all.
My NES Bill under an Obama Administration
I know last time I looked at my electric bill, I thought, “You know what? This isn’t enough. I’m really not paying enough for this.”
“[U]nder my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.” And no, that’s not taken out of context.
The change we need? Meh. And who cares about poor people anyway?
False Hope in a False Idol
From Canada’s National Post:
Anti-Americanism didn’t begin with George Bush and it won’t end with an Obama presidency. With rare exceptions, America has always inspired hatred and contempt, and for reasons that aren’t about to go away. Those who expect America’s haters to convert on November 4 need to get out more.
Many, many scholars have examined the phenomenon of anti-Americanism, some likening it to a kind of secular religion that explains all the world’s evils, from poverty and injustice to wars and environmental destruction. My explanation is less complicated: America is an unparalleled success, and with success comes envy and resentment, especially of those who don’t have it.
America is loathed because its brand of free-market capitalism remains ascendant, having outperformed European-style socialism and utterly defeated Communism, ideologies that attract many if not most of the world’s intellectuals. More than two centuries since its founding, the U.S. shows no sign of losing either its economic or military supremacy.
Solomon notes the various world intellectuals who have been for centuries celebrating the perceived failings or coming demise of the US.
And I thought this part was interesting:
Their backpacks could be counted on to display the Canadian flag, the better to avoid unpleasantries (German youths, reviled for their country’s Nazi past, sported backpacks with Swiss flags).
Last year when I was in Europe, I remember an Aussie telling me that I should work up a good Australian accent since, as opposed to their sometimes behavior to Americans, the Europeans didn’t mind Aussies or Kiwis all that much.
It’s a worthwhile read, I’d recommend it to anyone affected by Pollyanna Obamaism.
